Overview
Meaningful improvements to the S.R. 51 and S.R. 88 roadways and intersection have been difficult to implement given the many constraints in the corridor. Some of these constraints include:
  • Convergence of Saw Mill Run and Weyman Run

  • Close proximity of commercial, institutional, and residential buildings

  • Numerous intersections with local streets

  • Limited options for South Hills motorists creating congestion through this corridor

  • A constrained connection existing where local traffic from Glenbury Street merges with the bus traffic from the Port Authority South Busway.

The purpose of the S.R. 51 – S.R. 88 Intersection Improvement Project is to improve mobility and traffic congestion, reduce travel times and costs, and improve safety in the vicinity of S.R. 51 and S.R. 88. Several key issues will be kept under consideration through the implementation of the project. These include:

  • Community Cohesion
  • Vehicular and Pedestrian Traffic Flow Improvements
  • Improved Transit Connection
  • Flash Flood Events
  • Local Street Access
  • Business and Commercial Concerns
  • Right-of-Way and Property Issues

Because of the above identified key issues, preliminary alternatives will be evaluated according to how well they address each of the following needs developed for this project:

  • System Linkages (provide for major traffic movements for S.R. 51, S.R. 88, and other adjacent intersections)
  • Capacity and Transportation Demand (accommodate existing and future traffic demands specific to the traveled roadways including S.R. 51, S.R. 88, and other adjacent intersections)
  • Safety (improve safety for both vehicles and pedestrians)
  • Roadway Deficiencies (eliminate the deficiencies of the existing roadways and intersections)
  • Modal Interrelationships (preserve both existing, and future intermodal connectivity options for both transit, and pedestrians and/or bicyclists)
  • Site/Community Accessibility (maintain access to both existing, and future community sites throughout the project area)

The project team will undertake three specific tasks. Public input will be sought at each step.

  1. Understand the current deficiencies with the existing roadway system.

  2. Present a range of alternatives to alleviate the problem.

  3. Recommend a preferred alternative for the redesign of the S.R. 51 and S.R. 88 Intersection based on data collected and public input.
